- A Guide To What Principals Need to Know

The NZS 3910:2023 standard sets out to provide a more collaborative and clearly defined allocation of risk than its predecessor. For principals, this should enable a more streamlined approach to entering agreements, with risk that is better understood by all parties from the outset. The intent of the revised standard is to enhance process and communication, reducing the potential for disputes and cost and programme overruns - while also reducing the need for Special Conditions and the legal fees that typically accompany them.

Principals must now nominate an individual who is authorised to represent them in contract matters. This person must be confirmed either in the Special Conditions or thereafter in writing to the Contractor, Contract Administrator, and the Independent Certifier. The Principal's Representative is the formal point of contact throughout the project.
